You may have seen the ads or infomercials proclaiming "Lose Weight While You Sleep." Who among us would not want to effortlessly drop unwanted pounds in our sleep? Well you cannot quite dream away pounds but there is a strong connection between sleep and weight loss.
Sleep
The quantity and quality of sleep can help or hurt your weight loss efforts. It has long been known that sleep affects many of our hormones, but in recent years we have begun to see research around hormones that have an affect on our appetite and metabolism.
Have you ever craved carbohydrates and sweets following a night of too little or poor sleep? You can thank your hormones. Leptin and ghrelin can influence appetite. The production of both hormones is influenced by your quantity of sleep.

Ghrelin and Leptin
Ghrelin stimulates appetite and leptin sends the "full" signal to your brain. A lack of sleep can decrease your leptin levels and increase your ghrelin levels. This means that you not only feel hungrier but you also don't feel satisfied after you eat. When you combine the affects, you may be headed for an overeating disaster.
A joint project between Stanford and University of Wisconsin followed 1,000 volunteers. The volunteers recorded the number of hours they slept each night and doctors then measured the ghrelin and leptin levels and charted their weight. The results showed that the volunteers who logged less than 8 hours of sleep per night had lower levels of leptin, higher levels of ghrelin and a higher level of body fat. More specifically, the people who slept the least amount of hours per night weighed the most.

Cortisol
Cortisol is another hormone that is affected by sleep loss. Cortisol is sometimes referred to as the "stress hormone" because it is secreted in higher levels during the body's "fight or flight" response. Cortisol is involved in a number of functions including:
- Proper glucose metabolism
- Regulation of blood pressure
- Insulin release for blood sugar maintenance
- Immune function
- Inflammatory response
There is not a clear one to one cause and effect between sustained elevated cortisol and weight gain, but numerous studies demonstrate that prolonged stress wreaks havoc on our bodies and can hinder our efforts at weight control.
Sleep is not a luxury but a necessity for our bodies to function in peak condition. A lack of sleep affects not only our bodies perform but our mental and emotional responses to our daily lives. While you cannot sleep away the pounds, a good night's sleep will certainly give you energy to exercise and the mental clarity to make better food choices.
